Georgy Khomich starts from familiar and universally relatable images — boats, flowers and bouquets, depictions of animals and birds, nudes, etc. However, the material world is perceived by the artist more as a pretext to “play” with texture, color patches, and lines. As a result of this rhythmic interplay, the object dissolves into a stream of paint, the depicted forms shed the veneer of reality and mundanity, and become part of a purely pictorial composition. Georgy Khomich’s works are an attempt to draw the viewer’s attention to pure painting, and through it—to their inner world, personal emotions, and perception of life. “I don’t paint the object itself, but its emotion. Work on a painting usually begins not with the subject but with a sensory image. For example, when I was working on one of my series, I recalled a specific day and the feeling it evoked—and it was yellow. Yellow was the state, the mood, the sensation of the world, and, consequently, the image before my eyes. For me, it’s important to maintain a trusting, simple, and candid dialogue with the viewer — without lofty words or excessive pathos. To speak freely and lightly, to not be afraid of squeezing every last drop of paint from the tube onto the canvas, to experiment with powder, varnish, enamel, without binding myself to a specific series or theme.”
