Drawing on the legacy of conceptualist predecessors, Mikhail Rubankov explores the gaps between word and image, the absurdity of reality constructed by the bureaucratic language of public spaces, state and corporate systems, and the transgressive potential of mundane objects and events. In his artistic practice, Mikhail Rubankov frequently employs a technique of displacement — shifting the viewer’s position relative to the system of meanings in which they are perpetually embedded. A central aim of his work is to violently uproot the viewer from habitual modes of perception. This is achieved through confrontations with absurd declarations of the self-evident, or through semiotic games where initially perplexing signs ultimately reveal aspects of the viewer’s own being — dimensions inaccessible within the confines of daily existence.
