«Light is the primary medium in Severin Infanté’s artistic practice. In his dynamic installations and objects of the 1990s, as well as in performances later realized as photographic series in the 2000s, and in the project “Square Meter”, he explores and employs the capacities of light as a force that transforms visual perception. In the exhibition, works defined by the title’s size and format occupy the gallery walls, fitting into a structured grid of vertical and horizontal axes. Some squares remain unfilled, creating voids reminiscent of windows of an unloaded or not yet generated digital screen. These dark, unlit “screens” disrupt the flatness of the wall, forming recesses that seem to sink into darkness. Pulsation and movement are also present within the works themselves, where light elements composed of points are embedded into painterly or photographic surfaces, dissolving the materiality of the images and causing them to “wander.” The spectrum of subjects ranges from minimalist geometric constructions to striking “touristic” landscape views and text-based compositions. Some motifs recur, their variability achieved through changes in color or the trajectories of the light grid. If the “square meters” of Severin Infanté’s works in the main hall function as building blocks of a dynamic spatial installation, then the works from the “Practice of Light” series, realized in the 2000s, demonstrate a different mode of the artist’s relationship with light. Unlike the constructed pictorial objects, these works—created through direct photography without montage or image manipulation—serve as “documents” recording a landscape transformed through light-writing» — Irina Gorlova, curator of the exhibition project «Square Meter» in SISTEMA GALLERY.
