The Defect of Entry is the graduation exhibition of students from the Contemporary Art and Contemporary Paintingprograms at the Moscow School of Contemporary Art (MSCA). The exhibition invites viewers to perceive change not as a linear trajectory, but as a field of tension: between vulnerability and confidence, past and future, anticipation and transformation. It is a reflection on the states through which forward movement takes place — in art, in life, in professional practice. The exhibition becomes a space in which the artists invite the viewer to pause at the moment of transition — to recognize it not as an obstacle, but as a process.

The exhibition unfolds across three floors of the gallery, bringing together painting, video art, installations, digital media, textile objects, and sound compositions within a single space. Visitors will encounter a video project on boredom and its elusive nature, exploring duration as an artistic category. They will come face to face with artifacts from a gamified future, in which culture becomes more significant than industry. They will see childhood dreams realized through paintings inspired by the language of the Russian avant-garde. Visitors will also be immersed in a sensory installation that explores light as a manifestation of the human inner world, alongside a range of other artistic works. To deepen the experience of the exhibition, each project will be accompanied by an audio guide in which the artist personally speaks about their work, sharing its conceptual foundations as well as their personal experience.

“The Defect of Entry is an exhibition about the point of transition — one that each person experiences in their own way. For our students, it marks an important threshold: the completion of one stage of learning and the beginning of an independent journey within the art world. We hope this experience will become a source of support for them as they move forward,” said Mikhail Levin, Director of the Moscow School of Contemporary Art.
