Gazing into the soft light

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION

The exhibition originates from an understanding of gloss as a liminal space between everyday reality and the realm of dreams. Gloss appears as an alluring fantasy, la vie est belle—a life filled with dazzling events, brilliance, and effortless ease. For its audience, gloss functions as both a trendsetter and a guide toward the coveted and the desirable. Yet, by breaking this image of the “ideal” into its constituent elements—ideas, objects, situations—the reader gradually incorporates them into their own way of living.

The exhibition is dedicated to capturing the sensation of this transition—the ways in which routine states can be transformed into dreamlike, romantic ones. The excess and accelerating circulation of information, together with shifting social and cultural trends, contribute to the erosion of our capacity to remain enchanted by the reality of our own lives.

Among the many ways of reclaiming agency over one’s life and restoring sensuousness and sensitivity of perception is the act of withdrawing from the incessant hum of the outside world through gestures that embellish the everyday. This may take the form of romanticizing domestic life, imagining oneself in a different light, surrendering to fantasy and reverie, or seeking to perceive one’s own life as myth by reinterpreting it as a fantastical world inhabited by its own heroes and canonical events. These seemingly escapist practices become attempts to impose order upon reality and to emerge from the suspension of the ordinary—a process of gazing into the soft light of dreams that gently entwine themselves with life.
