SISTEMA GALLERY participated in the nineteenth edition of the Contemporary Istanbul International Contemporary Art Fair, which took place at Tersane Istanbul in Istanbul from 24 to 27 October 2024. Stand No. T1-09.
Artists: Dasha Maltseva, Darya Kalugina, Sasha Kokacheva.
The stand brings together the artworks of three young artists: Dasha Maltseva, Darya Kalugina and Sasha Kokacheva. The subjects of the paintings are born from references to the past, reflecting different aspects of working with the heritage of our memory. Dasha Maltseva directly refers the viewer to the historical context: her pictorial language stems from the sublime images of the Renaissance, creating the illusion of permanence and simple understanding of noble beauty. By leaving broad strokes, adding sweat and creating an ambiguous ‘aftertaste’ from her paintings, Dasha Maltseva emphasises that painting is affective in nature.
Darya Kalugina works with her own experiences in the past and their echoes in the present. The artist goes through old photographs, shards of memory and emotions that remained as a bright flash in the mind to leave an imprint of the presence of bygone days on the canvas. Sasha Kokacheva’s painting is more intimate, because it plunges a person into touching memories of tender love, when the object of lust becomes an unattainable ideal, whose image will be destroyed when the eye ‘stumbles’ over an unpleasant detail in the appearance or behaviour of the hero – a mysterious syncope.
