FAIR DESCRIPTION

SISTEMA GALLERY became a participant of the Contemporary Art Fair |catalog| by the Association of Galleries, which took place at the Sytin Printing House in Moscow from April 11 to 14, 2024.

Stand No. 40.

Artists: Dasha Maltseva, Darya Kalugina

SISTEMA GALLERY presents a series of paintings and graphic works at the |catalog| fair: baroque still life paintings by Dasha Maltseva against the backdrop of seascapes and “twilight memories” by Darya Kalugina. The artists’ solo exhibitions will be held at SISTEMA GALLERY in April 2024. Maltseva and Kalugina studied at the Master’s program “Contemporary Painting” at the HSE University under the curatorship of Vladimir Dubosarsky.

Dasha Maltseva’s Driftwood series is about bizarre installations on the seashore. The amazingly lush compositions include exotic flowers among which the heroes of pious paintings by El Greco, various corals, kunstkamera antiquities and caskets with exquisite dolls are lurking. Exceptional in the accuracy of color harmony, richness and nobility of tonal relations, the painting seems to play along with the cult of gourmet savoring a variety of emotion, served as if in a painting of baroque still life. However, the principal difference between Dasha Maltseva’s compositions and baroque paintings is the disembodiment of illusion and the virtualization of the subject environment. For some reason, this method of virtualization reminded me of the amazing Belgian artist Luc Tuymans. The images, as if passed through the filters of memory, become a kind of secondary image-remembrance of something long gone, of a time gone by, but disturbing, touching, waiting for participation and compassion. In the Baroque context, the theme of vanitas becomes significant, only in a new virtual projection.

Sergey Khachaturov

Darya Kalugina’s painting projects are based on photographs from the family archive and randomly found pictures, video and movie footage. The artist constructs subjects of “memories”, feeling nostalgic for the events that never happened.

Stand curator: Nadya October.
